There are four sublime abodes of the Buddha which are the illuminated states of mind of the Buddha or one could say the mind of Jesus Christ.

These four abodes are:

Metta or loving kindness.
Mudita or appreciative joy
Karuna or compassion
Upekka or Equanimity

While all of these states of mind of the Buddha are important to cultivate, probably the most widely practiced is Metta followed by Mudita. Metta furthers the development of the heart of loving kindness and has the capacity to counter the practice which people sometimes unconsciously develop of hating others or even groups of people. Mudita furthers the development of joy when seeing or hearing of the successes of others multiplying our own joy, counters jealousy. Both of these practices increase your own happiness and contentment.

These phrases for developing the mind of loving kindness are directed at yourself and others. That is, you may repeat these sets of phrases silently with intention to yourself or toward others as continuously as possible during your day or during a specific time frame and allowing it to continue during the day. In this practice, there is a sequence of people which you are directed to focus on. You may start with directing these phrases to someone you love, followed by yourself, then to someone you see, however you don't really know, and last to someone who is called the "difficult person". In addition, after you develop this practice, you may choose to widen the focus to groups of people, to states, or to countries or the world. Engaging in this practice shifts our perceptions on how we feel toward other people unraveling hate or dislike, while developing the heart of loving kindness within. The following phrases are the phrases arrived at by to use in her practice:

May you be happy
May you be healthy
May you be free of internal and external harm
May your heart be filled with loving kindness.

Hope you enjoy this practice!
